Titles and History
ReCar specializes in vehicles with a story. Most of our inventory includes rebuilt-title vehicles, clean-title vehicles with prior total-loss history, theft recoveries, hail vehicles, manufacturer buybacks, or vehicles with other reported damage history. We also occasionally offer clean-title, clean-history trade-ins and select wholesale vehicles.
A branded title is a title that carries a permanent notation about a vehicle’s past, such as salvage, rebuilt, flood, hail, theft recovery, or another state-designated history event. The exact wording and requirements can vary by state.
A rebuilt title generally means the vehicle was previously issued a salvage title after an insurance-related event, then repaired and completed the inspection process required by the titling state to be legally driven and registered again.
This vehicle has a clean title — no salvage or rebuilt brand — but its history report shows an insurance company paid a total-loss claim on it at some point.
Here's the part that confuses people: every car an insurance company buys back is a total loss. But a total loss doesn't automatically mean salvage title.
Some states brand every total loss as salvage, period. Other states only brand it as salvage once the damage passes a certain point. If the damage doesn't pass that point, the insurance company still pays it out as a total loss — but the state never brands the title. So you end up with a car that was a total loss, and still has a clean title.
Rules on this vary by state, so check with your local DMV to confirm how a clean title with total-loss history will be treated where you live.
Yes, a branded title or prior total-loss history usually affects resale value, but here's the part that matters most: you already captured that discount when you bought the vehicle.
Every car depreciates toward zero eventually, clean title or not. The gap in value between a clean title and a rebuilt title shrinks as the car ages, because they're both heading toward the same place. A 10-year-old rebuilt title car isn't worth much less than a 10-year-old clean title car, but a 1-year-old rebuilt title car is worth a lot less than a 1-year-old clean title car.
Since you bought at a discount, that savings is already yours. You pay less sales tax up front, less interest if you finance, and because you started at a lower price, you have less value left to lose as the car ages. The title history matters less every year that passes, and the money you saved on day one stays in your pocket.
This is a big reason we see so many repeat buyers. It's not that something went wrong the first time around, it's that they saved money buying the vehicle and saved money again when they sold it, so they come back and do it again.
Buying and Inspection
A prior insurance event, title brand, or damage-history report usually affects a vehicle’s market value. That history allows buyers to purchase a newer vehicle, higher trim level, or better-equipped vehicle for less than a similar clean-history vehicle.
Safety comes down to how well a vehicle was repaired and inspected, not the label on its title. A rebuilt title actually tells you a vehicle already passed the inspection required by the titling state before it could be sold again as roadworthy, which is more than you know about most vehicles with a plain clean title.
We encourage every customer, on every vehicle we sell, branded or clean title, to review the vehicle history report, inspect it in person, take a full test drive, and consider an independent mechanical inspection before buying.
Yes. ReCar believes you should understand the title status and reported history before making a purchase decision. Ask your sales representative for the available vehicle-history information and documentation for the vehicle you are considering.
Yes. Independent pre-purchase inspections are welcome and encouraged. This can be especially helpful for customers buying from out of town or purchasing a vehicle with prior damage history.
We've sold thousands of vehicles, and a large share of our business comes from repeat buyers and referrals. We think that's because we lead with transparency instead of hiding behind it: full vehicle history reports, clear title status upfront, and an open invitation for you to bring your own mechanic or inspection service before you commit. Buyers tell us that's the difference between us and dealers who'd rather you not look too closely.
A vehicle may be held with an approved deposit, subject to ReCar’s current deposit policy and the terms agreed to at the time of deposit. Contact the sales team before making travel plans, arranging financing, or assuming a vehicle has been reserved.
Review the title status and history report, inspect the vehicle in person or through a trusted third party, test-drive it when possible, obtain an insurance quote using the VIN, confirm financing eligibility if needed, and verify registration requirements with your DMV if you live outside Missouri. This approach helps you compare the savings with the vehicle’s history and decide whether it fits your needs.
Financing and Insurance
Absolutely. We've spent nearly a decade building relationships with local and nationwide lenders who understand rebuilt and damage-history vehicles, so financing one isn't a special case for us, it's most of what we do. Because we run this volume through those lenders every day, we've earned pricing and terms that a one-off buyer walking into their own bank usually can't get on their own, and we pass that along on rebuilt title and damage-history vehicles just like we do on clean titles.
Not necessarily, and this is exactly where our lender relationships pay off. Rate comes down to the lender and your credit profile, not just the title status on its own. Some lenders treat rebuilt title and damage-history vehicles the same as any other used vehicle, while others apply stricter guidelines for these vehicles.
Because we've spent nearly a decade working with lenders who actively finance rebuilt title and damage-history vehicles, we're able to match you with lenders who already understand these vehicles.
Yes, many insurance companies offer coverage for branded-title and damage-history vehicles. The specifics, like liability, comprehensive, and collision coverage, can vary by insurer, vehicle, title type, and state, so it's worth a quick call before you buy. Give your insurance agent the VIN and let them know the title status, and they can confirm exactly what coverage you'll have and what it'll cost. If you run into an insurer that pushes back, let us know, we can point you toward companies that regularly insure vehicles like these.
Yes, many buyers get full coverage on branded-title and damage-history vehicles, though we can't guarantee any specific carrier's underwriting decision since that's between you and them. As with the last question, give your insurance agent the VIN and title status upfront so they can confirm comprehensive and collision coverage before you finalize your purchase, and let us know if you need pointed toward a carrier that handles these vehicles regularly.
Yes, it's highly encouraged. Think of it as an extension of your factory warranty. A factory warranty comes free with certain vehicles from the manufacturer, while a service contract is something we charge for, since it's a separate product we purchase on your behalf to extend that protection once factory coverage doesn't apply or runs out.
Given our volume and years in the business, we've built relationships with providers who offer strong coverage at competitive rates, and who we hold accountable when it's time to pay a claim. We stand behind every protection plan we sell. Ask your sales representative what's available for your specific vehicle.
Warranty and Recalls
In many cases, safety-recall repairs may still be available for vehicles with salvage or rebuilt title history. Recall eligibility can depend on the manufacturer, the specific recall, and the vehicle’s status, so check the VIN with an authorized manufacturer dealer.
Warranty coverage depends on the vehicle, so it's really a case-by-case thing based on title type, mileage, and age.
Our vehicles are sold as-is unless we've put something different in writing. That said, a clean title vehicle still within its original factory mileage and age window can often keep its factory warranty. Some vehicles lose their factory warranty depending on the title brand and other specifics, and we make sure you know exactly where your vehicle stands before you buy.
Either way, we offer protection plans you can purchase for extra peace of mind, just ask your sales advisor what's available for your vehicle.
Trade-Ins and Selling to Us
Yes. ReCar accepts trade-ins, including clean-title vehicles, vehicles with loans, and many vehicles with damage history. Share your VIN, mileage, photos, payoff information if applicable, and a clear description of condition so we can provide the most accurate appraisal possible.
Yes. We'll review your payoff amount alongside the estimated value of your trade. If your trade is worth more than what you owe, that equity can be applied straight toward your new purchase.
If you owe more than the trade is worth, also known as being upside down, it's still often workable, we can look at rolling that difference into your new deal depending on lender approval and how the numbers line up.
Yes, absolutely. We buy vehicles outright, whether or not you're purchasing one from us, and we're interested in almost anything, clean title, branded title, high mileage, damage, you name it. Send us your VIN, mileage, condition, and a few photos, and we'll get your appraisal started.
Shipping and Out-of-State Buyers
Yes. ReCar can help customers explore shipping options and obtain a shipping quote. Shipping cost, timing, carrier availability, and responsibility for transport should be confirmed before purchase.
Absolutely. We sell to buyers all over the country, not just locally, and we can ship vehicles nationwide to make that easy. If you finance with us, our team walks you through approvals, down payments, and any protection plans before you ever make the trip, so most of the process is already handled by the time you arrive or your vehicle ships to you.
When you finance through ReCar, we can also help coordinate the title, tax, and registration paperwork for your state, which makes the whole out-of-state process a lot smoother. Since those rules still vary by state, we'll work with you and your local DMV to make sure everything lines up before the deal is final.
Yes, we do this all the time. ReCar can discuss pickup timing, required documents, payment, temporary-tag availability, and the steps needed to prepare for your trip. Out-of-state buyers should also verify insurance and registration requirements before traveling.
A vehicle may be held with an approved deposit, subject to ReCar’s current deposit policy and the terms agreed to at the time of deposit. Contact the sales team before making travel plans, arranging financing, or assuming a vehicle has been reserved.
Registration
Yes. Every state has a path to register a rebuilt-title vehicle, since state law requires a legitimately repaired vehicle to be titled somewhere. What varies is the process to get there: most states will accept another state's rebuilt title with no extra hassle, but a few states require the vehicle to go through their own inspection again before issuing a title, even if it's already rebuilt and titled elsewhere.
Before you buy, give your local DMV a call with the vehicle's VIN and current title type. It only takes a few minutes and tells you exactly what to expect, whether that's a simple title transfer or one extra inspection step.
